The Works of Walter Pater, Greek Studies: A Series of Essays Cambridge Library Collection, Vol. 7 by Walter Pater Nov 10, 2011 Paperback. Book Description Walter Pater 1839-94 was the foremost Victorian writer on art and on aesthetic experience. The Renaissance, first published as Studies in the Renaissance 1873, is his best known work, made up of essays on Italian art and the Renaissance. This version forms part of his collected works.

Sep 27, 2018 · In the following years Pater's friends oversaw the publication of several further volumes of previously uncollected essays, including Greek Studies 1895, Miscellaneous Studies 1895, and Essays from the Guardian 1896, as well as an unfinished novel, Gaston de Latour 1896. Nov 10, 2011 · This edition of Pater's complete works was published in 1900-1 in a limited edition of 775 copies. It comprises eight volumes with an additional volume of critical essays first published in The Guardian. The topics range from Plato, classical art, nineteenth-century literature and art, and Pater's only work of fiction, Marius the Epicurean.

May 09, 2017 · Pater the Classicist is the first book to address in detail Walter Pater's important contribution to the study of classical antiquity. Widely considered our greatest aesthetic critic and now best known as a precursor to modernist writers and post-modernist thinkers of the twentieth century, Pater was also a classicist by profession who taught at the University of Oxford. The “deeply felt” quality of Walter Pater's essay on Winckelmann indicates the depth of affinity between these two men. Young Pater shared Winckelmann's religious scepticism, his intense commitment to rationality, and his absorption in the study of art. As well, both shared an erotic temperament and wrote especially for young men. Walter Pater’s Studies in the History of the Renaissance is known as the “golden book” of the British Aesthetic movement. Though ostensibly focused on Italian Renaissance art, the book speaks obliquely to Pater’s own Victorian moment, challenging conventional. During the years 1875 and 1876, Pater composed mos of the Greek Studies. They follow closely on the heels of his Renaissance. The essays did not apps ar in book form, however, until after his death. We must note that a strong note of sense pervades these essays. Pater is]still following the doctrines j of his famous Epilogue. Had his readers checked on Pater, they would have found the references to Hegel to be frustrating. Engaging and influential, this is a book which echoes the writing of those it studies.' Louise Ellis-Barrett Source: Reference Reviews 'This volume, part of the New Cambridge History of English Literature series, represents a major contribution to Victorian literary studies that will be considered a standard reference work for many years to come.'. The book is a collection of essays on male artists and their art, and more importantly, their friendships. In the preface, Walter Pater tells how to approach a work of art. One must view a work of art in a way that there stands nothing between the material object and the spectator.
