I am not sure if this is due to the age of the publication, or a printer mishap, but it makes much of the book unusuable. This an account of the Maasai written by a British colonial officer. Except for a large section on Maasai language and grammar, the rest of the book is translations of Maasai texts dealing primarily with folklore, stories, proverbs, and songs.

Existing accounts of the Masai may be broadly grouped under three heads: 1 The popular impressionist accounts of the tribe by travellers in East Africa; the numerous travel works on this part of Africa nearly all contain some mention of the tribe, but in the main, these descriptions are calculated for their dramatic effect, and thus become largely inaccurate and valueless for the serious. The Maasai or Masai, an east African nomadic people, have been known as warriors who possess great strength and a strong sense of independence. They live in the countries of Kenya and Tanzania, in an area known as Maasailand. The region contains great.
Masai or Maasai mäsī´, a largely nomadic pastoral people of E Africa, chiefly in Kenya and Tanzania. Cattle and sheep form the basis of the economy that they have maintained in resistance to cultural change. The Masai live off the milk, blood, and meat of their livestock. Masai society is patrilineal; polygyny is practiced. The Uasin Gishu people were a community that inhabited a plateau located in western Kenya that today bears their name. They are said to have arisen from the scattering of the Kwavi by the Maasai in the 1830s. They were one of two significant sections of that community that stayed together. The other being the Laikipiak with whom they would later ally against the Maasai. Hollis 1905 noted that up till the mid-19th century, the Nandi referred to themselves as Chemwalindet pl.Chemwalin or Chemwal pl. Chemwalek while other Kalenjin speaking communities referred to the Nandi as Chemngal.

From the Preface: 'On my return to East Africa in January, 1905, I determined to pursue my studies in the languages, folk-lore, and customs of those tribes inhabiting our Protectorate that form an offshoot of the Nilotic stock, and to write an account of the Nandi-Lumbwa group on somewhat similar lines to those. The office that the Orkoiyot held was referred to as the Orkoinotet and was established among the Nandi by Kipsegun, a Segelai Maasai. The abilities that distinguished an Orkoiyot were hereditary and thus the office passed on to his son Arap Kipsegun though their dynasty was short-lived and ended with the son. Hollis also made note of the fact that the Orkoiyot's wives "may do no work, all their household duties being performed by servants, called otuagik". These privileges largely rested with the bearer of the office however and did not extend to the clan, though all children of the Talai clan wore a special necklace made of gourds, known as septook.
