Clements Robert Markham was born at Stillingfleet in Yorkshire on 20 July 1830. In 1844, he entered the Navy as a cadet, and in 1850, joined the British naval Franklin search expedition from London, 1850-1851, as midshipman on board HMS Assistance under Captain Erasmus Ommanney. Sir Clements R. Markham 1830–1916 had succumbed to smoke after accidentally igniting his bedclothes while reading by candlelight; the task of completing this history therefore fell to his friend and fellow geographer F. H. H. Guillemard 1852–1933, who published it in 1921. Clements Markham Sir Clements Robert Markham National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–04, and for launching the polar career of Robert Falcon Scott. Markham began his career as a Royal Naval cadet and midshipman, during which time he went to the Arctic with HMS Assistance in one of the many searches for the lost expedition of Sir John Franklin.

Admiral Sir Albert Hastings Markham KCB 11 November 1841 – 28 October 1918 was a British explorer, author, and officer in the Royal Navy. In 1903 he was invested as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. He is also remembered for designing the flag of New Zealand. full of romance. His imagination and natural energy found their food and outlet in many more varied interests than appeal to the ordinary person, and his life from childhood to old age seems to belong to the youthof the world. Clements Markham was born in 1830. He served in the Royal Navy from 1844 to 1851, taking part in the search for Sir John Franklin 1786-1847. In 1853 he entered the civil service, being from 1867 to 1877 in charge fo the geographical work of the India Office.
