George Romney was born at Dalton, in Furness, on the 26th of December, 1734. He was the third of eleven children, and discovered at an early age a great passion for mechanics. He was also, says Mr. H. 'enthusiastically attached to music, and passed much of his time in various experiments to make violins of different shapes and powers. Summary Note This the first biography of Romney was written by one of his closest friends. He and Hayley had met in 1776; and one of Hayley's first publications had been his Epistle on Painting, Addressed to George Romney 1778. In 1830 Romney's. Despite his lack of formal training, he became an expert in the field of Indian architecture, publishing Cave Temples of India and a History of Indian and Eastern Architecture, as well as The Holy Sepulchre and the Temple at Jerusalem, all reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection.
