When Francis Darwin put together Life and letters he did not know that the sketch of his father's evolutionary ideas, which was written in 1842, had survived. The pencil manuscript was discovered in 1896, after the death of his mother, in a cupboard under the stairs at Down House. Charles Darwin On the Origin of Species Foundations 1rwin Da, Charles. In 1842 he wrote what he called the "pencil sketch of my species theory", and in 1844 he wrote a fuller and more polished version, which he wanted published in the event of his death. These two essays are reproduced in this excellent book. Presumably it was written around the time of the 1842 sketch. As Darwin recorded in his pocket 'Journal' or diary 'During my stay at Maer & Shrewsbury 5 years after commencement wrote pencil sketch of my species theory.', 21v. It is annotated in Darwin's hand at some unknown date: 'This page was thought of as introduction'.
