Studies of a Biographer (Cambridge Library Collection - Literary Studies) (Volume 3) Sir Leslie Stephen

Sir Leslie Stephen KCB 28 November 1832 – 22 February 1904 was an English writer on philosophy and literary history. He was also one of the leading British mountaineers of his generation, the first editor of the Dictionary of National Biography, Thackeray's son-in-law and Virginia Woolf's father. 'Crossing "dark barriers": Intertextuality and Dialogue between Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott', Studies in Romanticism, 47.1 2008, 15-35. Examines intertextual references as a form of conscious poetic dialogue between Byron and Scott. Some of the papers selected here develop Sell’s ideas in largely theoretical terms. But most of them are partly or mainly literary-critical, ranging from poetry, masqueing, and drama of the Jacobean period, through Wordsworth and Coleridge, to Dickens, Pinter, and Rushdie. Sir Leslie Stephen showed a similar diversity of interests. The first volume that bore his name was the collection of agreeable essays on mountaineering entitled The Playground of Europe; but he had already published anonymously a series of humorous and satirical Sketches from Cambridge, and, under initials, a grave statement of the case for the North in the United States civil war.
