These 'letters to an undergraduate' were published in 1845, two years after the death of their author, Thomas Whytehead 1815-43. His outstanding student career at Cambridge suggested that he would remain in academic life, but having been ordained a deacon and then a priest, he volunteered for missionary work, and in 1841 sailed for the southern hemisphere as chaplain to the newly appointed. His only book, published in 1827, is dedicated to his older brother, Robert, a Romantic poet, who also wrote on historical subjects his books on Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and Brazil are also available in the Cambridge Library Collection. Thomas' three-volume work is organised chronologically, from Columbus to 1816. Volume 4 focuses on the period 1804-1805, and includes documents about peace treaties with local rulers, the establishment of Fort William College for the training of British civil servants especially in Asian languages, and Wellesley's final departure for England. This two-volume account of the life and friendships of the publisher John Murray 1778-1843, told largely through his voluminous correspondence, was published in 1891 by Samuel Smiles 1812-1904, whose Lives of the Engineers, Self-Help, and other works are also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection.
