Cambridge Library Collection - British and Irish History.

First published in 1852, his history of pauperism and the poor laws in England analyses the history of poverty and the various attempts at reform, including legislation in the reign of Elizabeth I, the statute of Charles II for the Removal of the Poor, and the pauper legislation of 1834. In 1846 he became an assistant poor law commissioner, and witnessed the deepening crisis at first hand. The first edition of this pamphlet was published in 1847. Reissued here is the second edition of 1849, the year when Ball assumed the more senior office of second poor law commissioner. The Library at the University of Southampton has a particularly strong collection of British Parliamentary Publications known as the Ford Collection. The Collection is named after the late Professor Percy Ford, who, with his wife Dr Grace Ford, brought the collection to Southampton and conducted research based on the collection. Robert Pashley 1805–59 spent 1833–4 exploring Greece and Turkey as a Trinity College, Cambridge Travelling Fellow and contributor to a British survey of the Mediterranean, yet it was the island of Crete that most captivated his attention; his travels there became the subject of this two-volume account, published in 1837.
