Introduction. A problem which can arise with conventional ultrasonic techniques used for measurements in solids is the requirement that piezoelectric transducers be acoustically coupled to the test structure with an acoustical impedance matching coupling medium such as oil or grease or immersing the entire material structure to be tested in a tank of water or using a water squirter system.
J.C. Moulder and J.A. Bieber, Pulsed eddy current measurements of corrosion and cracking in aging aircraft, Materials Research Society Symposium Proceedings of Nondestructive Characterization of Materials in Aging Systems, vol. 503, 1998, p.263. The sensitivity enhancing effects of eddy-current testing at frequencies close to electrical resonance are explored. Var-ied techniques exploiting the phenomenon, dubbed near electrical resonance signal enhancement NERSE, were experimentally investigated to evaluate its potential exploitation for other interesting applications in aerospace materials, in particular its potential for boosting. Water sorption in epoxy based materials was analyzed by dielectric spectroscopy using remote sensors. A method to determine diffusion coefficients from the changes in permittivity during water absorption is proposed and was verified experimentally by comparison with standard water gain measurements. ACQUISITION PROGRAM: PMA-261: H-53 Heavy Lift Helicopter Program. OBJECTIVE: Develop a nondestructive inspection technique capable of detecting and characterizing bridging in graphite/epoxy and fiberglass/epoxy laminate parts. Because these oxides occupy several times more volume than the originating iron, their accretion eventually causes radial cracks in the concrete around the bar. A PZT Lead Zirconate–Titanate transducer requires a couplant to send and receive mechanical waves. This requirement is a major shortcoming of the PZT technique for use in field applications. In the laboratory environment careful considerations and surface treatments are required to use PZT because the couplant can affect the consistency of experimental results.
