BABINGTON, CHARLES CARDALE 1808–1895, botanist and archæologist, was born at Ludlow on 23 Nov. 1808, His father, Joseph Babington 1768–1826, at the time of Charles's birth a physician, afterwards took holy orders. He had a fondness for botany, contributed to Sir James Edward Smith's ‘English Botany,’ and taught his son the elements. Autograph Letter in the third person, to Miss Atwood, offering assistance with any botanical questions, and commenting on a grass specimen. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition, second leaf laid down on small album page. The first, published in 1801, provides a list, organised according to the Linnaean system, of the hothouse and greenhouse plants in the newly established Botanic Gardens at Glasnevin, near Dublin, and the second, from 1802, is a guide to all the plants in the gardens, including the arboretum and 'Hortus tinctoria', where dye plants important for the Irish. The Royal Horticultural Society's botanical competition of 1864 aroused an early stirring of concern for the need for botanical conservation in Britain. Competitors were required to submit a set of pressed plants collected from a single British county and although the organizer's intention was to encourage study of British plants amongst “all classes”, this laudable aim provoked an angry. He was known as beetle Babington because of his interest in beetles. He worked closely with William Newbould 1819-1886, also a botanist, and they went on three tours gathering botanical evidence.
