This collection of letters from the composer to his three great friends covers the period 1841–68. First published in 1888, the letters are reissued here in the 1890 English translation by the pianist and Beethoven scholar John South Shedlock 1843–1919. Music Archives: composers The main focus of the composer archives at Cambridge University Library lies on British 20th century music and on composers who have some connection with Cambridge. Some of these archives are very extensive and can contain a variety of materials such as music manuscripts, papers and correspondence, concert programmes, printed music, books on music.

As a result the library holds, for example, an amazing collection of Victorian songs. Named special collections provide additional collections strengths such as 18th-century music treatises in the Arnold Bequest, the Kikutei scrolls in the Picken Collection, and historical performance sets in the CUMS orchestral library, to name just a few. Please note that the letters a shelved by the name of the correspondent, i.e. the person to whom Bliss bliss wrote or from whom he received a letter, thus the letters to and from Benjamin Britten are kept together under Britten's name. The letters are catalogued in chronological order. Many of the letters do not include the year of writing, which has been supplied editorially. Audio-visual facilities for cassettes, CDs and DVDs, and a computer terminal dedicated to accessing the Naxos classical library, and other music sound resources. An e-piano which can be used for playing through music in the collection headphones can be borrowed during staffed opening hours.
