The Royal Astronomical Society, the oldest such organisation in the world, was founded in 1820. Following its centenary, this historical survey appeared in 1923. Comprising chapters contributed by leading astronomers of the early twentieth century, the work is particularly valuable for its inclusion of extracts from primary sources. Brought up by her father to make weather observations and to use a telescope, she became a member of the Liverpool Astronomical Society - on behalf of which she undertook her Russian expedition - and was later active in founding the British Astronomical Association. The Royal Astronomical Society did not at this point admit women..

He co-edited the first official history of the Royal Astronomical Society along with John Louis Emil Dreyer, History of the Royal Astronomical Society 1820–1920 1923, reprinted 1987. History of the Royal Astronomical Society, 1820-1920 (Cambridge Library Collection - Astronomy) H. H. Turner

It was ten years after the founding of the Society, in February 1830, that it first sought a Charter. In May the President Sir James South petitioned the King and, on 15 December 1830 the King signed the book as Patron of the Society. From this time on the Astronomical Society became the Royal Astronomical Society. As well as institutional and membership records dating back to 1820, the RAS archives contain the working papers of William, Caroline and John Herschel,. The Geological Society of London 1807 and Royal Astronomical Society 1820 did not, nor did the societies that later became the Royal Society of Chemistry. The RAS first admitted women as Fellows in 1916, and the Geological Society did so in 1919; the Institute of Chemistry began to do so in 1892, while the Chemical Society waited until 1920. The Society will suspend all meetings and BMI Library openings until further notice. This is due to the current situation and the need for containment of the C-19 virus outbreak. We will keep members informed and council officers will be in contact with those members, in the next few days, who have paid for meetings attendance and associated.
