May 12, 2020 · The original European settlers came in the early 17th century from the midland and southern counties of England. They first settled in Virginia's tidewater coastal plain. Many colonists had connections to Barbados. The earliest Africans to Barbados was in 1619. Starting in 1680, large numbers of Africans were captured and brought as slaves to Barbados. Alasdair MacGregor avoided capture for over a year but surrendered on promise of safe conduct to England. After the Glorious Revolution the Scots were drawn into King William II's continental wars, beginning with the Nine Years' War in Flanders 1689–97. By the time of the Act of Union, the Kingdom of Scotland had a standing army of seven units of infantry, two of horse and one troop of Horse Guards, besides varying levels of fortress artillery. Two standard general histories are by P. H. Brown 3 vol., 1900–1909 and A. Lang 4 vol., 1900–1907. Invaluable also are four studies by W. L. Volume III covers the period 1939–2000, when Britain adjusted to a decline in manufacturing, an expansion of the service economy, and a repositioning of external economic activity towards Europe.
