Etna: A History of the Mountain and its Eruptions (Cambridge Library Collection - Earth Science) G. F. Rodwell »

Jun 30, 2011 · Book Description The year before this work of 1878 was published, the author, G. F. Rodwell 1843-1905 had climbed Mount Etna and collected many geological samples. His intimate knowledge of the active volcano is evident in the detailed portrait of its history. Jun 30, 2011 · Cambridge University Press, Jun 30, 2011 - Science - 186 pages 0 Reviews G. F. Jun 30, 2011 · One chapter is devoted to explaining how to climb the mountain - something Rodwell was qualified to do, as he had scaled it himself in 1877. He also gives a historical account of the most dramatic aspect of Etna - its many eruptions, which had first been recorded as early as 525 BCE, while the most recent activity had taken place in 1874, only a few years before Rodwell's ascent.

About this book A reprint of a classical work in the Cambridge Library Collection. G. F. Rodwell 1843-1905 was researching an entry about Mount Etna for the Encyclopaedia Britannica when he realised that no history of this Italian volcano existed in English. He therefore he began the present work, which was published in 1878. Thucydides b.c. 471-402 alludes in the last lines of the Third Book to several early eruptions of the mountain in the following terms: "In the first days of this spring, the stream of fire issued from Etna, as on former occasions, and destroyed some land of the Catanians, who live upon Mount Etna, which is the largest mountain in Sicily. The 1224 Mt. Etna eruption is a significant event both in terms of the mass of erupted materials and because it involved the lower eastern slope of the volcano, reaching down to the sea. Nevertheless, it is unknown to current historical catalogues. It introduces the readers to the wonderful world of volcanoes and helps them visit, explore, photograph, and above all, appreciate volcanoes both in eruption and in reposethe book takes the reader from the molten core of the earth to the spewing lava flows and deadly eruptions of the past and present. From 1600 to 1669 the activity of Etna was characterised by a high volumetric output of lava with a mean eruption rate of 1.19 m 3 s − 1 Hughes et al., 1990. This was followed by a pause from flank eruptions and significant activity was only re-established from the middle of the eighteenth century.

Jul 30, 2011 · The geologist and explorer Angelo Heilprin 1853-1907 was one of the first scientists to climb the erupting volcano Mont Pelee in 1902. This study, published the following year, records his on-the-spot observations and the scientific data he collected.

[1] The 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull volcano, and the social consequences across the world, demonstrated some key issues in volcanological science and its application. Scientists in several nations were called upon to advise governments, to justify models and to give guidance about likely future activity. This is symptomatic of many other fields: scientists increasingly have a role in.
