About this book A reprint of a classical work in the Cambridge Library Collection. G. F. Rodwell 1843-1905 was researching an entry about Mount Etna for the Encyclopaedia Britannica when he realised that no history of this Italian volcano existed in English. Nevertheless, it is unknown to current historical catalogues. It introduces the readers to the wonderful world of volcanoes and helps them visit, explore, photograph, and above all, appreciate volcanoes both in eruption and in reposethe book takes the reader from the molten core of the earth to the spewing lava flows and deadly eruptions of the past and present. From 1600 to 1669 the activity of Etna was characterised by a high volumetric output of lava with a mean eruption rate of 1.19 m 3 s − 1 Hughes et al., 1990. This was followed by a pause from flank eruptions and significant activity was only re-established from the middle of the eighteenth century.

This is symptomatic of many other fields: scientists increasingly have a role in.
