Chinese Music, a treatise covering many aspects of Chinese music by Jules A. van Aalst 1858-after 1914, a Belgian who worked in the Chinese customs service beginning in 1881, was published in Shanghai in 1884. The arrangement of cards under each composer is classified and the guide card for most composers' names gives a list of the classification numbers, which are at the top of each card. This is based on the conjecture that because the recorded examples of Chinese music are ceremonial, and the ceremonies in which they were employed are thought to have existed "perhaps more than one thousand years before Christ" J. A. Van Aalst, the musical compositions themselves were performed, even in 1000 BC, in precisely the manner.

It is used in preference to the se at imperial receptions and on joyful occasions.
