Cambridge University Library houses a vast and internationally important collection of manuscripts, from early medieval illustrated bibles to personal papers and administrative records of the university. These volumes, first published between 1856 and 1867, contain the first published catalogue of the manuscripts held by the University Library. The majority of our medieval manuscripts, for example, are catalogued in the five volumes of the Catalogue of the Manuscripts preserved in the Library of the University of Cambridge and in the Summary Catalogue of Additional Medieval Manuscripts in Cambridge University Library acquired before 1940 by Jayne Ringrose. For over five hundred years Cambridge University has been building up one of the world’s most important collections of Hebrew manuscripts. The University Library holds significant numbers of Bibles and biblical and talmudic commentaries, along with important halakhic, liturgical, poetic, philosophical, kabbalistic and scientific manuscripts.
