It is well known that Becket, who frequently found himself at variance with the pope, as well as bitterly opposed to his king, was also out of sympathy with the overwhelming majority of his fellow-bishops. Scholars have paid little attention to the Penitential of Bartholomew, Bishop of Exeter d. 1184. Despite the popularity the work enjoyed in the late twelfth century, scholars have dismissed it as largely unoriginal and lacking in canonistic skill. Dom Adrian Morey, who produced an edition of the Penitential, stated that it had little 'orig. de droit fran~is et itranger4 131934499-513;Dom A. Geoffrey c. 1152 – 12 December 1212 was an illegitimate son of Henry II, King of England, who became bishop-elect of Lincoln and archbishop of York. The identity of his mother is uncertain, but she may have been named Ykenai. Geoffrey held several minor clerical offices before becoming Bishop of Lincoln in 1173, though he was not ordained as a priest until 1189. First written in 1931, this remains an acclaimed piece of historical reconstruction. It establishes what the laws of the English Church were, the sources from which they were drawn, and their effect on the relations between England and Rome.
