According to the famous letter of Ps.-Aristeas, the Pentateuch or first five books of the Septuagint was translated during the reign of Ptolemy II 285–247 BC by seventy scholars hence the name, though “unofficial” versions of the Greek Old Testament surely must have been current among Greek-speaking Jews somewhat earlier than this.
