He was born March 22, 1863, on Pattee Hill, near Bristol, New Hampshire, the son of Lewis Franklin and Mary Philbrick Ingalls Pattee. Anna Laura Plumer became his wife in 1889 and died in 1927. They had one daughter, Sarah. Pattee is regarded as the first "Professor of American Literature," having published the groundbreaking works "Is There an American Literature?" in 1896 and A History of American Literature Since 1870 in 1915.
